Vietnam Tourism Booms: Indian Arrivals Surge 300%
Vietnam witnessed a remarkable 300% surge in Indian tourist arrivals in 2024, significantly surpassing pre-pandemic levels. This surge highlights the growing appeal of Vietnam as a top travel destination for the burgeoning Indian middle class.

Record-Breaking Recovery
In 2024, Vietnam welcomed over 501,000 Indian tourists, a dramatic increase from the approximately 169,000 recorded in 2019. This impressive recovery rate positions India as Vietnam's leading inbound market, outpacing major source markets like China (64%), Japan (75%), and South Korea (106%). This influx of Indian tourists has significantly diversified Vietnam's international visitor base, providing a crucial boost as recovery from traditional markets continues.
Popular Destinations & Emerging Hotspots
Indian tourists are drawn to a variety of destinations across Vietnam. Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Danang, and Ho Chi Minh City remain popular choices. However, emerging hotspots like Nha Trang and Sa Pa are gaining significant traction, underscoring the need for enhanced promotion of these regions to Indian travelers.
Overcoming Challenges
Despite this impressive growth, Vietnam faces challenges in fully capitalizing on the Indian market. Thailand, for example, welcomed 2 million Indian tourists in 2024, four times the number of visitors to Vietnam. This disparity can be attributed to factors such as more liberal visa policies, extended stay options, and a robust network of over 200 direct flights to India.
Vietnam currently offers 56 direct flights to six major Indian cities, with plans to add 14 more routes in 2025. However, former Vietnamese Ambassador to India, Ton Sinh Thanh, emphasized the need for a more extensive flight network to effectively cater to the vast Indian market of 1.4 billion people.
Addressing Language Barriers & Improving Service Quality
Language barriers remain a significant challenge for Indian tourists in Vietnam. Surveys indicate that 80% of Indian travelers encounter language-related difficulties. To address this, Vietnam needs to prioritize language training programs for tourism staff.
Furthermore, high service costs can deter repeat visits from Indian travelers. Ensuring transparent pricing at tourist sites and hotels, while offering competitive and value-driven travel packages, is crucial to attract and retain Indian tourists.
Capitalizing on the Rising Middle Class
With India's middle class projected to grow from 33% in 2022 to 46% by 2030, Vietnam has a significant opportunity to further capitalize on this burgeoning market.
- Cultural Sensitivity: Enhancing cultural sensitivity by increasing vegetarian and Indian cuisine options, encouraging Halal certifications for restaurants, and training staff to respect cultural and religious norms is crucial.
- Diversifying Tourism Offerings: Expanding beyond leisure tourism to include business events (MICE), conferences, exhibitions, and destination weddings can attract a wider range of Indian travelers.
A Success Story: Corporate Tourism
A notable success story is the August 2024 event in which Sun Pharmaceutical, India's largest pharmaceutical group, brought over 4,500 employees to Vietnam. This demonstrates the significant potential for corporate tourism and MICE events to attract large groups of Indian travelers.
Looking Ahead
To sustain this growth, Vietnam must prioritize improvements to visa policies, including exploring visa-on-arrival options and ultimately aiming for bilateral visa exemptions to simplify travel for Indian visitors.
Investing in targeted marketing campaigns that effectively communicate Vietnam's unique cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and luxurious retreats to the Indian market is crucial. Furthermore, developing robust infrastructure and training personnel to cater to the specific preferences of Indian tourists is essential to enhancing their travel experiences.
By addressing these key challenges and effectively showcasing its potential as a premier Southeast Asian destination, Vietnam can solidify its position as a top travel destination for Indian travelers.
